The Brooklyn Museum, the second-largest art institution in New York City, turns 200 this year and celebrating the occasion with a series of events that will continue through the summer of 2025.
One such event is “The Brooklyn Artists Exhibition,” on view through January 26, 2025. The show includes the work of more than 200 artists who live or keep studios in Brooklyn—the most populous of New York City’s five boroughs. Unsurprisingly, the School of Visual Arts is well represented, with a dozen alumni contributing work.

Those artists include MFA Fine Arts graduates Kyung Tae Kim (2017), Alison Kuo (2014), Leo Tecosky (2011), Zac Thompson (2019), and Kit Warren (1986); Sarra Hussein Idris (MFA 1998 Photography and Related Media); Guadalupe Maravilla (BFA 2003 Photography); BFA Fine Arts graduates Chris Martin (1992) and Rhesa Paul (2023); Josh Sucher (MFA 2016 Interaction Design); Cyle Warner (BFA 2023 Photography and Video); and Jason Bard Yarmosky (BFA 2010 Illustration). The exhibition also includes work by MFA Fine Arts faculty member Brad Kahlhamer.
These artists’ creations tackle themes that resonate on both local and global levels—migration and memory, identity and history, uncertainty and turbulence, healing and joy. Together, their work captures the vibrancy of Brooklyn and its residents, who are bound by deep-rooted connections and a shared love of this singular place.

The Brooklyn Artists Exhibition was selected by a committee led by artists Jeffrey Gibson, Vik Muniz, Mickalene Thomas, and Fred Tomaselli. Participants represent a full range of disciplines, from drawing and painting to sculpture, video, installation, and beyond. The show is also a successor to the museum’s longtime “Working in Brooklyn” series, which appeared regularly between 1980 and 2004. A virtual tour of the exhibition is also available online.
Additionally, for the opening night of the Brooklyn Museum’s 200th birthday party, alumnus Lizzy Itzkowitz (MFA 2024 Illustration as Visual Essay; BFA 2018 Cartooning) painted a dynamically colorful mural for the gift shop and a nearby vending machine, in collaboration with Mystry Mart.
