From T magazine: “Crystal Moselle, the director most recently of the feature ‘The Wolfpack,’ first spotted Nina Moran and Rachelle Vinberg on the G train, skateboards in tow. They swapped information on the platform. ‘I was talking mad loud, and I noticed she was peeping us, but everybody peeps when you’re a girl with a board on the train,’ Moran says. ‘We gave her our email because we’re real. We waited to see if she was.’ To the girls’ surprise, Moselle reached out—and spent the next few months getting to know their all- female skateboard crew that also includes Ardelia Lovelace, Jules Lorenzo, Kabrina Adams and Ajani Russell.

Moselle eventually began filming the group (and learned that some of the girls, aged 18 to 23, are also aspiring artists and filmmakers). ‘When I met them, I think that I was really drawn to the idea that they are girls in a world that is mainly dominated by boys,’ Moselle says. ‘They’re incredibly passionate. They face intimidation every day. For me, it’s about the characters first. The more I learned about them and the things they go through, the more entrenched I became. I am probably going to do a feature with them.’

An opportunity to experiment presented itself when Miu Miu tapped Moselle to helm the 12th installment of its Women’s Tales series—a program dedicated to funding short films by young female directors.
