The School of Visual Arts Continuing Education (SVACE) Division is a proud sponsor of the 2019 MoCCA Arts Festival in New York City on April 6-7, 2019. MoCCA Arts Festival is a two-day multimedia event series and Manhattan's largest independent comics, cartoon and animation festival, drawing more than 7,000 attendees. Visitors experience 400 exhibiting artists displaying their work, award-winning honorees speaking about their careers and artistic processes, and featured artists conducting workshops, lectures and film screenings. MoCCA advances the Society of Illustrators' broader mission to serve as Manhattan's singular cultural institution promoting all genres of illustration through exhibitions, programs and art education.

To promote the professional development of comic book artists and illustrators, SVACE is exclusively sponsoring the entire MoCCA Arts Festival programming, while co-organizing and sponsoring MoCCA's Professional Development discussion series.

Supporting MoCCA's programing is the perfect fit for SVACE, with an industry footprint in visual storytelling built through our classes, events, award-winning faculty, students, residents and alumni. To back these profession-oriented panels providing expert career advice further solidifies SVACE's commitment to translating professional studies into published projects and beyond. "It’s common knowledge that SVA is at the center of comics instruction in the world,” says Tom Motley, SVACE faculty member.

Here are three illustrations. One superimposes cartoon figures on a flower blossom. Another features a group of figures climbing from a hole. The third depicts a figure smashing the ground with classical columns crumbling.

This year’s MoCCA Festival offers professional development events. At Professional Development 101: Art Directors’ Roundtable, hear from SVACE faculty members Will Varner and Viktor Koen, along with Emma Allen (The New Yorker), Matt Lubchansky (The Nib), and Alexandra Zsigmond (formerly The New York Times). At Professional Development 102: Artists' Roundtable, artists Andrea Tsurumi, Josh Bayer, Fran Meneses, and Julia Rothman will share their own perspectives on maintaining a career and life as a working artist in conversation with artist and comics editor Kristen Radtke (The Believer).

MoCCA Fest will spotlight “Drawing Across Borders,” an exhibition of Cartooning for Peace, and it will honor artists Edie Fake, Liana Finck, Keith Knight, and Bill Sienkewicz.

And look for a booth by Sara Varon, who teaches Silkscreen for Illustrators here at SVA Continuing Education!
