Attendance Policy
Students are required to attend all class sessions on the days and times listed on their schedules. Students who are absent for one-third or more of the scheduled sessions of a course will be administratively withdrawn from the course with a grade of “W.” Students should be aware that any missed sessions of a course due to late registration will be considered absences for the purposes of this policy.
- Courses that meet for 15 sessions: no more than 4 allowable absences
- Courses that meet for 7 sessions: no more than 2 allowable absences
- Courses that meet for 5 sessions: no more than 1 allowable absence
Students will receive email alerts if they are marked absent in any of their classes, though students are always encouraged to stay home if they are ill.
Students should also note that excessive absences can also have adverse effects on their grades and academic progress. Each faculty member may set their own attendance and participation requirements for their courses.
Students should monitor their attendance closely and review their SVA email accounts for any alerts from our office. If a student has episodic or cyclic physical or mental health conditions that may require an attendance accommodation, they should register with Disability Resources as soon as possible.
If a student is officially registered for a course that they are not attending, they should make contact with their academic advisor as soon as possible to rectify their schedule. Similarly, students may not attend a class for which they are not registered.

Updating Personal Identity Details
Legal Names
Requests to change a legal name must be accompanied by appropriate documentation (such as a court order, marriage license, federal/state ID, etc.). Students may submit a Legal Name Change Form with the Registrar. Faculty and staff members may contact Human Resources to change their legal name.
Chosen and Preferred Names
Any student, staff, or faculty member may officially declare a chosen name to be used where possible across campus.
Chosen names will be reflected wherever possible, such as on the following SVA records:
- Grade rosters
- Attendance rosters
- SVA ID cards
- Mid-term evaluations
- SVA email display name*
Legal names must be used for some records, including student transcripts, financial aid documents and student invoices, payroll records, tax documentation, and SVA account usernames. Note that official correspondence from the College may use a person's legal name.
Individuals may complete a Chosen/Preferred Name Declaration Form with the Registrar. Current students, alumni, staff, and faculty members may update their chosen names (as well as other personal identity details) in their MyServices User Profile.
Changes to a chosen or preferred name will be made in the College’s main database system within 24 hours, but it may take additional time for the name to be reflected in other systems across campus.
* To change your SVA email display name, log in to your SVA email account and follow these instructions. Note that SVA account usernames (email/login name) cannot be changed.
Pronouns and Gender Identity Options
Current students, alumni, faculty, and staff members may declare their pronouns and gender identity by accessing their MyServices User Profile and selecting the “Edit Personal Identity” button.
An individual’s pronouns will display prominently on faculty members′ class and attendance rosters.
To protect individual privacy, gender identity declarations are not displayed on class rosters, nor are they disclosed to any third party without the express written consent of the individual.
