This July, SVA’s many gallery spaces are full of work from several graduate programs across disciplines, including photography, painting, collage, mixed media, and more. Whether it’s the thesis work of the class of 2024 or those moonlighting in the Continuing Education program, there are plenty of opportunities to escape the heat into the imaginations of artists. Plus, MFA Visual Narrative offers a chance for prospective students to experience the program for a day.

EXHIBITIONS

Through Saturday, July 13 | MFA Photography, Video, and Related Media 2024 Thesis | SVA Chelsea Gallery

An exhibition of thesis work by artists in the MFA Photography, Video, and Related Media class of 2024, curated by Nora Khan. In a statement about the exhibition, department chair Charles Traub says, “This year, a remarkably diverse group of graduates are presenting works in the lens and screen arts that tell stories as diverse as they are. And, to no surprise, they are exploring new and unique applications that the camera technology offers. Perhaps no other visual medium is comparable to what the lens can do to unveil insight into the details of our ever-changing reality for both the maker and the viewer. Unlike those graduates of the last several years, this year’s graduates were thus free of COVID-19 restraints, so they looked at the environments that were rebuilding around them.”

Through Friday, July 19 | “Evidence of Things Unseen” | The Invisible Dog Art Center, 51 Bergen Street, Brooklyn

MFA Art Practice presents the 2024 thesis exhibition in collaboration with the Invisible Dog Art Center of Brooklyn, encompassing work by eight artists who will complete the MFA Art Practice program in July 2024. Participating artists include Melanie Brewster, Dana Donaty, Elena Kalkova, Maria Markham, Grace McCoy, Josh Stein, Melissa Wheeler and Antonia Wright. The Invisible Dog Art Center is open Thursday through Saturday, 1:00 – 7:00pm; Sunday, 1:00 – 5:00pm; and Monday through Wednesday by appointment only.
