MPS Digital Photography presents a talk with photographer Ignacio Ayestaran, part of its i3: Images, Ideas, Inspiration lecture series, guest-curated this spring by Elizabeth Avedon. Ayestaran has been involved in the commercial industry as a 3D artist for the last 20 years and has received many accolades, including an Emmy award for his work on the Discovery Channel. He was a contributing artist for Getty Images for over 10 years and his images formed part of the exclusive Getty Images Prestige Collection. His photographs have been used by Apple, BBC Worldwide, Conde Nast Digital, Lonely Planet Publications, The New York Times Magazine, Peter Luger Steak House, Smithsonian Magazine, Viacom and Volkswagen Do Brasil.

MA Curatorial Practice presents Nirith Nelson, a contemporary art curator, lecturer and the Landeau Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at The Israel Museum, Jerusalem. She was previously the art director of the Residency Program of the Jerusalem Center for the Visual Arts and the art advisor to the Jerusalem Foundation. Since 1998, Nelson has been a faculty member at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, teaching curatorial practice and contemporary art.

MA Curatorial Practice presents a talk with Maithu Bu, Payton Croskey and Rebecca Stein on AI security and ways to address socially harmful uses of AI. While AI has been utilized in recent years for various security efforts—like locating landmines at sea—it has also been used for monitoring and tracking down civilian populations. Abuse of power is all the more possible when code is invisible. In this panel, the speakers will present their research on AI security, touching on technological borders, bioluminescent landmine locators and cybersecurity economic ties.

MA Curatorial Practice presents Bernardo José de Souza, an independent curator based in Madrid and Rio de Janeiro. De Souza worked as the artistic director of Fundação Iberê Camargo, in Porto Alegre, Brazil, until 2019. He was part of the curatorial team of Videobrasil Biennial, held in São Paulo in 2015, and also a member of Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy’s curatorial team for the 9th Mercosul Biennial in Porto Alegre, Brazil (2013).

MFA Photography, Video and Related Media presents a comprehensive, one-day symposium focused on the pervasive emergence of AI and its effects upon the lens and screen arts. This event is the first part of a series of lectures and discussions with artists, theorists, educators and industry professionals reflecting on the recent explosion of interest, use and questions surrounding AI image synthesis through tools such as DALL-E, MidJourney, Stable Diffusion and others. Registration is required to attend.

BFA Visual & Critical Studies and the Honors Program present art historian Alex Kitnick to discuss what “normal art” is and if it is something we want to make. Kitnick is an assistant professor of art history and visual culture at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, and a frequent contributor to publications including Artforum, Art Journal and October.
