Late last summer, right before the beginning of the fall 2021 semester, SVA began rolling out a year-long initiative to celebrate the life and work of Milton Glaser, the legendary designer, longtime SVA faculty member and former acting chairman of the College’s Board, who passed away in 2020.
Many iterations of this ongoing tribute to Glaser are visible in and around the College and in New York City. They include a banner featuring a black-and-white portrait of Glaser taken by artist and colleague Michael Somoroff, located on the exterior upper wall of the SVA building at 209 East 23rd Street; the exhibition “SVA❤️Milton: The Legacy of Milton Glaser,” still on view to the public online until February 5; and the inaugural issue of the newsletter The Glaser Gazette, featuring stories and articles about Glaser, his impact on the art world and his legacy at SVA.

Now, the second issue of The Glazer Gazette is out. A meaty 12-page volume designed by the Visual Arts Press, the College’s in-house design studio, this second edition of the Gazette features an abundance of vintage Glaser designs and charming anecdotes. Highlights include an interview with one of Glaser’s last assistants, conducted by Steven Heller, co-chair of MFA Design; a magisterial essay about Glaser's art by the late Silas H. Rhodes, the co-founder of SVA; a reprint of Glaser’s timeless commencement speech to the class of 1979; a spotlight of the best work from the glossy “magazine revolution”-era he led, and more.
Volume 2 of The Glaser Gazette is hot off the press and is available around campus, offered as a free publication for the SVA community. The newsletter is also available as a PDF, which you can download below. And keep an eye out for two more issues of the Gazette to come out this spring and summer.
