The Society of Illustrators Honors SVA Artists at its ‘Illustrators 65’ Exhibition

Fifteen SVA community members are recognized at the Society of Illustrators’ prestigious annual show.

The Society of Illustrators, one of New York’s premier venues for showcasing the history and art of illustration, is currently running its annual juried exhibition recognizing outstanding creative work. Titled “Illustrators 65,” the two-part show features notable work created in 2022 by leading contemporary artists. This year, more than a dozen SVA community members were awarded across a range of categories including advertising, institutional, uncommissioned, surface/product design, animation, book and editorial illustration.


The first part, “Illustrators 65: Advertising, Institutional, Uncommissioned, Surface/Product Design, and Animation,” is currently on view through Saturday, February 11. The second part focusing on book and editorial work opens on February 15. Here’s a look at the winning entries from SVA community members.


Illustration (Institution)–Silver Awards:

BFA Illustration faculty member Marcos Chin created Art Is as part of SVA’s long-running series of subway ad posters with art direction by BFA Advertising and BFA Design Chair Gail Anderson (BFA 1984 Media Arts) and Visual Arts Press design director Brian Smith (MFA 2006 Design).

Illustration (Uncommissioned)–Silver Awards:

Toma Vagner’s (BFA 2017 Illustration) “DISORDERS” illustration series captures 12 different mental disorders based on interviews, books, found material and personal experiences had by the artist over a period of 18 months.

Illustration in the Surface/ Product Design–Gold Awards:

Mojo Wang (MFA 2019 Illustration as Visual Essay) illustrated the packaging for Kiehl’s Lunar New Year Limited Editions 2022, The Year of Tiger.

Animation Category–Gold Awards:

In partnership with Detour and the Missouri School of Journalism, Brian H. Britigan (MFA 2017 Illustration as Visual Essay) created the storyboards, artwork and animation for the documentary short, The Whitewashing of Missouri.

The team who animated Zelle X Vox’s educational video series The Science Behind Scams included alumni Arthur G. Guttilla (MFA 2015 Computer Arts), Hao Li (MFA Computer Arts 2016) and Jean S. Yu (BFA 2021 Animation).

Illustrators 65: Part Two will feature four SVA alumni: Selina E. Alko (BFA 1995 Illustration) for I Is For Immigrants; Tara Anand (BFA 2022 Illustration) for A Refugee’s Journey; Grace Kim (MFA 2020 Illustration as Visual Essay) for Requiem for the Supreme Court; and Nora Krug (MFA 2004 Illustration as Visual Essay) for On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century.


Illustrators 65: Advertising, Institutional, Uncommissioned, Surface/ Product Design, and Animation,” will be on display through Saturday, February 11. Part two, “Illustrators 65: Book and Editorial,” will be on display Wednesday, February 15, through Saturday, March 18. A reception will be held for Illustrators 65: Part One on January 27, 6:00 – 11:00 pm.


Admission is $15.00. The event is located at the Society’s headquarters at 128 East 63rd Street, between Lexington and Park Avenues.
